What is a Root Canal?

When the nerve of a tooth becomes infected it can cause a toothache. This usually occurs as the result of a large cavity or filling encroaching on the nerve area. A root canal removes the nerve (pulp) of the tooth by cleaning out the canals in the tooth roots. This process removes the bacteria responsible for infection and leaves the tooth without a nerve, and therefore, without feeling. Prescription of an antibiotic may or may not be required before or after the root canal. Dentists recommend a crown after the root canal to prevent fracture of the tooth.

We like to save teeth where possible, but in some circumstances patients may choose extraction instead. If there is a periodontal (gum/bone) problem with a tooth, or if there is very little tooth structure left, then we may suggest that you consider extraction of the tooth and replacement with an implant. Some patients will choose to extract the tooth and not replace it as that is the most inexpensive option.
